About Homeopathy

What is homeopathy?

The word homeopathy is derived for the greek language meaning

Same-Suffering.

Homeopathy is based on the principle that ‘like cures like’ – in other words, a substance taken in small amounts will cure the same symptoms it causes if it was taken in large amounts. Homeopathy was created by German physician, Samuel Hahnemann (1755-1843).

Wlliam Osler the good physician treats the disease,

Homeopathy treats the person, not the disease.

Homeopathic remedies are created from substances in nature. They are prescribed for an array of different conditions of a mental, emotional and physical nature. Acute, chronic and palliative.

Homeopathy is used worldwide by over 200 million people. Homeopathy is included in the healthcare systems in Brazil, Mexico, Chili, Indian and switzerland. Numbers are steadily rising in UK, EU and North America.

Principles of homeopathy

Like cures like

Seasonal allergies are suffered by many, however not all suffering is the same. Each individual will suffer different symptoms. Watery eyes, runny nose, sometimes with a burning sensation.  Itchy nose, eyes, pallet, ears...etc.

A homeopaths job is to match the symptoms to the most similar Homeopathic remedy.

Ask yourself, what happens to you when you cut an onion?

Burning runny eyes, runny nose.

One of the most common homeopathic remedies for seasonal allergies and the common cold is Allium Cepa. Allium Cepa is the botanical name for the onion. Allium Cepa homeopathic remedy is derived from red onions.

Homeopathy vs Naturopathy?

While some naturopaths may practice homeopathy, most lean more towards nutritional supplements.  Supplementation can be a very effective method of supporting the body naturally, but supplements can often be costly.

The intention of homeopathy is to eradicate the illness or dysfunction completely. Homeopaths do not prescribe nutritional supplements; only homeopathic remedies which are included in your first consultation and only $10 thereafter (if needed).

What can Homeopathy treat?

Homeopathy can be used in first aid, acute, chronic and palliative care on the physical, mental and emotional level. Homeopathic remedies can help to relieve insect bites, sunburn, bumps and bruises.

We see wonderful results with general childhood illnesses such as colic, digestive upset, coughs, colds, earache, fever, sleep issues, bedwetting, respiratory issues and strep throat..etc.

Homeopathic remedies can be used safely while breastfeeding for postpartum support and recovery.

Homeopathy is great for condition of a more mental/emotional nature such as anxiety, depression, OCD, ADHD and other behavioural concerns. Homeopathy can be extremely effective in unresolved emotional traumas of abuse, neglect, grief...etc.

In some cases medical intervention is required, some conditions may result in surgery. Everything has its place. In the event of a serious physical trauma you would visit the emergency room for emergency medical care.

I feel that carefully monitored homeopathic care has it place in many areas. Whenever we administer a homeopathic remedy we are strengthening the immune system of the patient, we are also reducing the need for extended or recurring use of pharmaceutical medication, medications that do have their place in healthcare, but not always necessary when we can take a holistic approach.

Chronic conditions can be unravelled and eradicated with competent and persistent homeopathic care. Chronic disease arrived slowly over time, patience and persistence is required from both the patient and practitioner. When a chronic case arises we would take into consideration the stage of the disease and severity of the condition. We have many highly educated Homeopaths in our community who have chosen a take a special interest a particular groups, children, women's health, men's health..etc. Others have dedicated their careers to a specific disease such as MS and Cancer.

A good Homeopath will take on patients they feel are in there realm of expertise and refer more complex cases to the practitioner holding the correct skill set required for that particular case.

A good Homeopathy should also give educated recommendations to support the patients health such as lifestyle changes, dietary support, exercise and supportive supplements. We must refer to qualified expertise when needed.

What Homeopathy IS NOT!

Homeopathy is a unique system of medicine and should not be confused with Naturopathy, herbal medicine, traditional chinese medicine, essential oils or other supplements

Homeopathy medicines are known as Homeopathic remedies.

Homeopathic remedies are derived from substances from nature. The most common sources are plants, minerals and animals.

Carefully selected substances are subject to rigorous quality control during the process of becoming a homeopathic remedy.Additionally the Homeopathic student is also required to complete classes in Anatomy & Physiology, Pathophysiology, Physical exam, Nutrition and Pharmacology.

The difference between the two is that naturopathy is a health system that utilizes many different treatments and modalities including IV therapy, supplements, nutrition, acupuncture and homeopathy.

What to expect under the care of a Homeopath

In homeopathy we treat the whole person not the disease. An initial consultation can take anywhere between 1-3 hours. During that time the homeopath will concern themselves with every aspect of the patient revealing their mental, emotional, physical and spiritual picture. The patients likes, dislikes, fears and phobias and general theperment are included in the over all picture. A detailed intake form will be provided to include family history, previous surgeries, traumatic events, illnesses, lifestyle and medications. When all this information is gathered the Homeopathy can then begin to piece them together. Each piece of information can be thought of as a puzzle piece. After a carefully taken case the remedy required for the patient will immerge.

The administration of the carefully selected remedy depends upon the patient's sensitivity and vitality.

Time is needed to come up with a carefully selected remedy and treatment plan specifically for the patient. Typically prescribing a remedy for an acute condition can be done by the end of the appointment after gathering pertinent information and details about the patient.

As a Homeopath we are constantly asked on the spot

"I have a sore throat what remedy do I need" ?

Yes, we do have remedies in our pharmacy specific to a condition or a specific problem, however we haven't begun to understand the specific individual with the condition yet. A good homeopath will take the complete case of the individual, only then will the Homeopath be confident in prescribing a well selected remedy.

Chronic conditions and sometimes more complex acute conditions need more research and consideration. Our Homeopathic pharmacy contains over 5000 remedies. We have a group of remedies that are commonly prescribed, tried, true and in some cases easily identifiable. However, some cases are not so clearly identifiable and could require a more obscure remedy. Homeopathy medicines are known as Homeopathic remedies.

What makes it “Homeopathic”?

A substance from nature can be used in many forms of medicine. In order to make it homeopathic it must be processed in a particular manner. The is known as potenization. Without the substance going through the potenization process, the substance is simply not homeopathic.
